This impressive photo of the F3 tornado that hit College Park, Maryland last week was taken by Ming Ying Wei from the 18th story of a building, about 2 1/2 miles to the east of the storm's path. Just to the left of the funnel is the top of Byrd Stadium, at the north end of the University of Maryland campus, where the University of Maryland plays their home football games.

This was the most devastating twister to hit central Maryland in 75 years. Two students were killed by the tornado when their car was hurled hundreds of yards by the storm's nearly 200 mile per hour winds. Not only was there damage to dorm buildings, but the university president's home was also battered. Damage estimates from the tornado have topped 10 million. The towns of Beltsville and Laurel, north of College Park, were also in the path of the twister and sustained significant damage as well. See the Earth Science Picture of the Day for September 26.
