This soil profile from a construction site in northern Wisconsin shows a buried layer of topsoil, the darker layer beneath the lighter colored clay, apparently covered during a previous construction episode. The trench pictured is a few meters from a lake front, and rounded beach cobbles are abundant in the old surface, though the underlying clay is largely rock free. Surface features and soils in this part of Wisconsin are dominated by the effects of the last continental glaciation which ended about 10,000 years ago.
