The photo above showing the early morning Sun, a solar corona and a glitter path on the sea was taken on August 15, 2007, from Blue Hill Bay in Maine. At slack, low tide, we set off on the 6 mile (10 km) kayak crossing of down east Maine's Blue Hill Bay -- headed for Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park. We had planned a route that wove through various islands, giving us protection from the wind and waves of the open sea, but the early morning calm and idle tide provided us the perfect window for a safe crossing, saving us miles (and hours) of extra paddling. The glitter path is a product of multiple reflections from the Sun off of the Bay's wavelets -- each reflection is a miniature of the Sun's disk.
