After 145 consecutive days without rain in south central Phoenix, we were finally the welcome recipients of a winter storm on March 16. More than 2 inches (5 cm) of rain fell on low lying areas, and up to 30 inches (cm) of snow accumulated at the higher elevations. This picture was taken in Carefree, Arizona, which is located about 18 miles (29 km) north of Phoenix, at an elevation of approximately 1,200 feet (366 m). The most welcome rain and snow gave us an opportunity to appreciate the snowy desert landscape, including cacti, Yucca plants, and Hillside Paloverde trees. The tall cactus at left center is a Saguaro cactus.
