Our old Sun has been quite moody of late. Active sunspot regions (AR10484) have generated powerful coronal mass ejections, which when directed toward the Earth, have triggered impressive auroral displays. As a result, the northern lights have been visible in locations long distances from the geomagnetic pole, such as the Mediterranean Sea. The deep red aurora pictured above over Greece was captured just before midnight on November 20 and was centered near the constellation of Ursa Major (Big Dipper).
